Sustainability & Community Engagement

Sustainable urban development has been in the forefront of the EU and global agenda since the legendary 1992 Rio Conference. Despite the best intentions of city planners and data analysts, their joint ventures and the use of new technologies has not always helped to achieve excellence in environmental and social sustainability. Therefore, within this thematic focus of PCDC, we are addressing the issues of socio-technical mismatches and opening a discussion about transparent smart cities.

Mobility As A Service & Data Platforms

Datafication of our everyday lives grew exponentially over the last couple of years. Many pilot projects all over the world were launched to explore the benefits of smart mobility: electric cars, micro mobility, and self-driving vehicles. Most recently, mobility as a service became a way to extrapolate technologically advanced prototypes to reality. In this section of PCDC, we will discuss the solutions for user-friendly mobility applications as well as for platforms integrating mobility data and easing the management of transportation flows.

Open Data & Open API

Within this thematic section, we will explore the variety of potentials for different types open data and open API. Also, the limitations of going open and necessity to secure data as well as the technicalities of working with the private sector in negations about open data and open API for city management will be debated.

Building Information Modeling & Data Modeling

This section will present a glimpse into the future of smart cities and smart planning. The transformation most US cities are going through at the moment, shifting from data officers to data analysts, clearly indicates the strong direction that the future data departments will be focusing on more complex issues. For that, there will be a need to work with more complex tools, like data modeling. Although only a few cities are now ready for this transition, it shall become a great goal and aspiration for many.

About

PCDC is hosted by the city of Prague to accelerate the sharing of the best practices, networking, and community engagement in the sphere of urban data. Each year we focus on excelling data practices in different areas and bring together experts from different fields to discuss the potential to change our cities for better through city-data.

Last year we’ve explored the consciousness of smart cities through the topics of mobility as a service, community engagement and sustainability, open data and API and building information modeling. Keynotes were delivered by Ira Winder (MIT), Ekim Tan (Play the City), Michael Woodbridge (New Cities) and Ross Douglas (Autonomy, Paris). A friendly atmosphere accompanied the discussion throughout two conference days. Small scale afternoon workshops that always follow the morning presentations enabled speakers and visitors to abandon the barriers and widen their horizons together.

This year we open a discussion about modularity in the city by picking three main areas that are gaining traction: circular economy, innovation, and open-source. Around three hundred attendees will come together to address practical concerns in regard to advancing circularity, open-source, and innovation hubs and living labs in their cities. Limited capacity workshops for professionals and municipal workers in respective fields will highlight the topics that Prague is aspiring to pursue in the future.

To embark on this two-day journey into the urban data world with us, please register in the Registration Section below and wait for approval.

Feedback

I am impressed by this reflective gathering of Prague’s leading technologists, and am proud to be part of a discussion that pushed beyond mere buzzwords. Every keynote challenged us to think critically about whether our computational “solutions” are solving the right problems, all the while sharing best practice techniques for implementing digital tools.

Prague City Data Congress 2019 was exactly the sort of event that NewCities loves to be involved in; a convening of experts from across sectors, disciplines, and distances, working together to unearth new perspectives that will help improve quality of life in cities. We look forward to PCDC 2020!

Michael Woodbridge, Research Programs Manager at New Cities, Canada

Prague City Data Congress offers a very good opportunity to think about and plan the future of digital cities. People from different disciplines can join forces to improve the life of citizens.

Bahanur Nasya, project manager of PlaceCity & researcher at Eutropian, Austria

A smart city is the path, a data city is the aim. The more Prague learns about it, the more it will have an influence on citizens’ lives. And this knowledge will bring new jobs, new business opportunities that help create the economy of the Czech Republic.

Munish Khetrapal, Managing Director for Development and Smart Solutions at Cisco

This conference was very important and specific, because here in Prague you have a very progressive mayor who is moving the capital in a very positive direction. She can get together in one place academia, the private sector and the local authority so that they can openly discuss a topic that concerns every citizen. You are setting a new direction in global access based on co-operation with other cities

Hany Fam, Vice President of Mastercard

I think that it’s great for Prague that it’s paying attention to the topic of data and I can see that Prague is on a very good path in the area of Open Data. The congress was very useful because, in my experience, it is one of the few congresses in the world that is technical and specific. I could meet fellow experts here and share experience.

Paola Andrea Pollmeier, open innovation coordinator Corporación Ruta N, Medellín, Columbia

I’m really happy that we managed to arrange the congress, which was attended by experts on city data from three continents, in Prague. By holding the congress, Prague showed that, globally, it is a leading city involved in data. I was really pleased by the feedback from international experts about our Golemio data platform, which we presented to attendees at the congress. What is very important for us is to gradually build a community of data experts between individual cities. The involvement of data analysts is then particularly important. I strongly believe that the Prague Data Cities Congress has started a tradition of meetings between data experts and today I’m already looking forward to the next congress.
